The Power of Praise and Worship!
“Sing the praises of the Lord, you his faithful people; praise his holy name”- Psalm 30:4 (NIV)
After Paul and Silas were arrested, “they were thrown into prison, and the jailer was commanded to guard them carefully. When he received these orders, he put them in the inner cell and fastened their feet in the stocks” (Acts 16:23–24). It seemed a hopeless situation. Yet instead of focusing on their circumstances, Paul and Silas began “praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them” (Acts 16:25). Then something extraordinary happened: “Suddenly there was such a violent earthquake that the foundations of the prison were shaken. At once all the prison doors flew open, and everyone’s chains came loose” (Acts 16:26).
The praise of Paul and Silas did not merely change the atmosphere—it invited the hand of God.
Praise is powerful because it shifts our attention from the size of our problem to the greatness of our God. When we praise Him in difficult circumstances, we declare that our situation is not greater than His power. We release the burden into His hands, no matter how heavy it feels.
When Jehoshaphat faced a vast enemy army surrounding Judah, he and the people responded with worship: “Jehoshaphat bowed with his face to the ground, and all the people of Judah and Jerusalem fell down in worship before the Lord. Then some Levites… stood up and praised the Lord, the God of Israel, with a very loud voice” (2 Chronicles 20:18–19). What followed was extraordinary. “As they began to sing and praise, the Lord set ambushes against the men of Ammon and Moab and Mount Seir who were invading Judah, and they were defeated” (2 Chronicles 20:22).
What a powerful weapon! Through praise and worship, God delivered victory to Judah. When we worship, our focus turns to Him instead of our fears. As we look up, God moves. Worship reminds us that He is still on the throne—even when circumstances appear completely out of control.
You may be facing a “midnight” season today. Perhaps there is a situation you cannot change, a door that seems closed, or a burden that has become too heavy. Begin worshipping and praising God. While it may feel counterintuitive, do not underestimate the power of lifting your voice to Him. Praise moves mountains.
Praise Him before the breakthrough. Worship Him before the answer. Thank Him even while you are waiting. The God who opened the prison doors for Paul and Silas is still God today.
Prayer
Heavenly Father Almighty God, instead of focusing on myself and my situation, I bow before You and give You all the praise. May my worship be pleasing to You—an act of sacrifice for Your glory. As I wait on You through praise and worship, I know Your Spirit is moving and opening doors. This I pray in Jesus’ name!
