Taking Possession of the Land!
“See, I have given you the land. Go in and take possession of the land that the Lord swore he would give to your fathers.”— Deuteronomy 1:8 (NIV)
Many of us have received a promise from God about “possessing the land.” That land may be a job, a business opportunity, victory over an adversary, healing from illness, the restoration of a marriage or relationship under threat. Yet, to our surprise, the journey is often far from easy, and we begin to wonder whether God truly intended the promise for us.
The experience of the Israelites gives us a clear picture of what possessing the land actually means. The Lord declared, “See, the Lord your God has given you the land. Go up and take possession of it…” (Deuteronomy 1:21). God had already given them the land, but that did not mean the process would be effortless. Taking possession required them to fight. They faced fortified cities like Jericho (Joshua 6) and powerful enemies who appeared as giants and filled many hearts with fear ( Numbers 13).
Their real challenge was not whether God was able to give them the land; it was whether they were willing to trust Him enough to move forward and confront the opposition. Sometimes what stands between us and God’s promise is not His unwillingness to bless us, but our own fear of taking the next step. God had already spoken: “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go” (Joshua 1:9).
Like them, perhaps there is a “land” God has called you to possess—a new opportunity, a greater responsibility, starting a business, resurecting a dream, a relationship, or a new season of life—but fear is holding you back seeing how big the task is. Do not allow past disappointments or the size of the obstacles to convince you that the promise is impossible. Hold firmly to what God has said!
Taking possession of the land does not mean there will be no battles. It means that the presence of opposition does not cancel the promise of God. As the Lord assured Joshua, “No one will be able to stand against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you” (Joshua 1:5).
The Israelites had to fight, but they did not fight alone. God went before them. And when God goes before you, you can face whatever lies ahead with courage. Go and take possession of the land!
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for the land You have given me. Even though it is filled with challenges and enemies, I look to You for the courage to face every obstacle, knowing that You have gone ahead of me and that victory is already secured. I step forward today in complete confidence that the land You have promised is mine. This I pray in Jesus’ name!
