Praying effectively

“The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective” (James 5:16).

One of the most effective ways to pray is through Scripture. When we pray God’s Word, we are praying according to His mind and will. We are not merely presenting our desires to God; we are standing upon what He has already spoken.

The Bible tells us: “For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart” (Hebrews 4:12). After His long fast, as Jesus prepared to begin His public ministry, He faced temptation from Satan. In each encounter, Jesus responded with the Word of God.

When the devil said, “If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread,” Jesus replied, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone.’” (Luke 4:3–4). Later, when Satan offered Him all the kingdoms of the world in exchange for worship, Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve him only” (Luke 4:7–8).

Jesus did not engage Satan on the enemy’s terms. He stood firmly upon what God had already spoken.

If Jesus Himself used the Word of God to resist the enemy and stand firm, how much more should we? When we face an uphill battle, we can declare God’s promises over our circumstances. We can remind ourselves: “The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged” (Deuteronomy 31:8).

The Word of God gives us something solid upon which to stand when circumstances appear uncertain. So, when you pray, open the Scriptures. Find God’s promises concerning your situation, believe them, declare them, and pray them back to Him.

Reflection: Do I use scripture in speaking promises to my life and canceling the attacks of the enemy?

Prayer for today: Lord Father, Almighty God of Abraham, Maker of heaven and earth, by the power of Your living Word, I bring all my requests before You with thanksgiving. Grant them according to Your loving mercy and divine, perfect will. Help me to stand firmly upon Your Word, especially when circumstances seem difficult and the enemy seeks to discourage me. Strengthen my faith and teach me to pray according to Your will. This I pray in Jesus’s name!
