Looking Up to God!
“In you, Lord my God, I put my trust” Psalm 25:1
Abraham and Lot faced an interesting challenge. As they journeyed together, the Lord blessed them abundantly. Yet, their blessings created an unexpected problem: “Now Lot, who was moving about with Abram, also had flocks and herds and tents. But the land could not support them while they stayed together, for their possessions were so great that they were not able to stay together. And quarrelling arose between Abram’s herders and Lot’s” (Genesis 13:5–7).
Sometimes we yearn for God’s blessings, but when they come, they can also bring unexpected challenges.The beauty of this story is how maturely Abraham handled the situation. Instead of allowing the disagreement to destroy their relationship, Abram said to Lot: “Let’s not have any quarrelling between you and me, or between your herders and mine, for we are close relatives. Is not the whole land before you? Let’s part company. If you go to the left, I’ll go to the right; if you go to the right, I’ll go to the left” (Genesis 13:8–9).
What a remarkable attitude! Abraham was not desperate to win the argument out of greed or for the sake. He was willing to let Lot choose first because his confidence was not in what he could possess; it was in the God who had blessed him. He knew that his blessings had come from God. He knew that the God who had carried him that far was able to carry him even further. After all, the earth belongs to God. As Scripture says, “Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool” (Isaiah 66:1). And again, “Every animal of the forest is mine, and the cattle on a thousand hills” (Psalm 50:10).
Abraham’s faith was rewarded. After Lot had separated from him, the Lord said: “I will make your offspring like the dust of the earth, so that if anyone could count the dust, then your offspring could be counted. Go, walk through the length and breadth of the land, for I am giving it to you” (Genesis 13:16–17).
Now, isn’t that something! There are times when God is not telling us to fight our enemies or compete for what we think we deserve. Instead, He is calling us to look up to Him and trust Him. He is saying, “Move on. I have something greater in store for you.”
So, when you find yourself in a situation where you appear to be losing, look up to God. Your source is not people, possessions, positions, or circumstances. Your source is the Almighty God!
Prayer: Heavenly Father, Almighty God, too often our eyes are fixed on the lesser things instead of looking up to You, the author and finisher of our faith. Today I choose to look to You in every situation—even when it feels as though I am losing. I trust that faith in You will yield a far greater blessing. In Jesus’ name, I pray!
