God’s Unconditional Love
“But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” — Romans 5:8
When Mary Magdalene appeared before Jesus and anointed His feet with oil, washing them with her tears, the Pharisee who had invited Jesus was shocked. He said to himself: “If this man were a prophet, he would know who is touching him and what kind of woman she is—that she is a sinner.” — Luke 7:39 (NIV)
For the Pharisee, a person’s worth and acceptance were conditional upon their being right with God. But Jesus was demonstrating something profoundly different: unconditional love.
Human love is often conditional. There is a saying, “Scratch my back and I will scratch yours.” The implication is that I will love, help, or value you because you have something to offer me. As long as the benefits continue, the relationship continues. But when the benefits disappear, the relationship may also come to an end.
Sadly, we see this kind of conditional love in many relationships. A marriage may struggle because spouses begin to withdraw their affection when the other person fails to meet their expectations. Sometimes children feel loved because they perform well at school, behave well, or make their parents proud. But when they fail, disappoint, or make serious mistakes, they can be rejected. At times, even friendships can disappear when a person can no longer provide what the other needs.
But God offers us a completely different kind of love. God’s love is not based on our performance, our achievements, our wealth, our goodness, or our ability to repay Him. He loves us because love is His very nature.
The story of the prodigal son ( Luke 15:11-32) beautifully illustrates this love. When the son returned home after wasting his inheritance, the father did not stand at the gate demanding an explanation before accepting him. He ran to meet him, embraced him, and welcomed him home. That is the heart of God.
Perhaps today you feel unworthy because of mistakes you have made. Perhaps people have rejected you because you no longer meet their expectations. Remember this: God’s love for you is not cancelled by your failures. Your worth comes from the fact that you are loved by God. That is unconditional love.
Prayer: Heavenly Father Almighty God, Thank You for loving me with an everlasting and unconditional love. Thank You that Your love is not based on my performance, achievements, or failures. Thank You that even when I was far from You, You still loved me and sent Your Son, Jesus Christ, to die for me.Teach me also to love others with the same grace and compassion You have shown me. This I pray in Jesus’ name!
