God Our Refuge
“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” — Psalm 46:1 (NKJV)
Life has moments when we feel surrounded by troubles, uncertainty, opposition, and circumstances beyond our control. In such times, where do we turn? We look for a refuge—a place we can run to for protection and security.
The life of David beautifully reveals where our true refuge is found. When Saul learned that David had gone to Keilah, he declared, “God has delivered him into my hands, for David has imprisoned himself by entering a town with gates and bars.” Saul then mobilized his forces to besiege David and his men (1 Samuel 23:7-8). David had to flee and seek a place of safety.
Scripture records: “David stayed in the wilderness strongholds and in the hills of the Desert of Ziph. Day after day Saul searched for him, but God did not give David into his hands” (1 Samuel 23:14).
Later, David would write from that place of deep trust: “Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust’” (Psalm 91:1-2, NIV).
Like David, you may find yourself under attack. It could be at the workplace, where opposition rises to threaten your position. It could be in the marketplace, where adversaries seek to steal your contracts. Your marriage or family may be under pressure. Yet fear not—there is a sure refuge you can run to for deliverance.
Having God as your refuge does not mean the battle suddenly ends. In fact, the intensity of the attack may increase. But with Him as your covering, you remain secure. He promises: “He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart. You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the plague that destroys at midday. A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you” (Psalm 91:4-7).
Prayer: Heavenly Father, Almighty God, in the midst of attack I run to You, for You are my refuge and stronghold. You are the God who surrounds me with a hedge of protection and is my Deliverer. So I run and take refuge in You! This I pray in Jesus’ name!
