Be Cool!

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go” ( Joshua 1:9).

One of the beauties of the English language is its openness to new words and fresh meanings. Recently it welcomed “boda boda,” a term from the streets of Uganda for the popular motorcycle taxis. In African-American culture, the word “cool” has long carried a deeper meaning. While it once simply described pleasant weather, it came to describe a person who stays calm and composed even when everything around them is in chaos. In the face of turmoil, the one who remains unruffled is called “cool”—and in many communities, that quiet strength is deeply admired.

We see a perfect picture of this kind of “cool” in the life of Jesus. One day He said to His disciples, “Let us go over to the other side of the lake.” They got into a boat and set out. As they sailed, Jesus fell asleep. A squall swept down on the lake, so fierce that the boat was being swamped and they were in real danger. The disciples woke Him, crying, “Master, Master, we’re going to drown!” Jesus got up, rebuked the wind and the raging waters, and the storm subsided. All was calm (Luke 8:22–24).

You know what, if the disciples were living today, they might have turned to one another and said, “Our Master is cool!”

How about you! Are you facing storms in your life right now? The Lord speaks two clear words to you. First, call on Him—just as the disciples did—and trust Him to still the storm. Second, do not lose your composure. Stay cool, knowing that the Lord is in control.

Prayer: Almighty Father, God of heaven, whatever storm I am facing today, I look to You. I trust Your power to calm every wind and wave. Help me remain steady and cool because of the faith I have in You. In Jesus’ name, I pray!
