A Kindly heart

"Do not let kindness and truth leave you; Bind them around your neck,Write them on the tablet of your heart" ( Proverbs 3:3)

While he was down David found a true friend called Jonathan. Although he was in line for succession Jonathan became fast friends with the man his father King Saul feared most. "And Jonathan made a covenant with David because he loved him as himself" ( I Samuel 18:3).

Later, when "Saul told his son Jonathan and all the attendants to kill David. But Jonathan had taken a great liking to David and warned him, “My father Saul is looking for a chance to kill you. Be on your guard tomorrow morning; go into hiding and stay there" ( I Samuel 19:1-2).

After he had become King, David remembered his friend Jonathan who had taken great risks to save him but had perished along with King Saul. "David asked, “Is there anyone still left of the house of Saul to whom I can show kindness for Jonathan’s sake?” ( 2 Samuel 19:I). When a crippled son of his late friend Jonathan was presented to him, he said to Mephibosheth, "Don’t be afraid,” David said to him, “for I will surely show you kindness for the sake of your father Jonathan. I will restore to you all the land that belonged to your grandfather Saul, and you will always eat at my table" (vv 7).

As King David had a full plate and he could easily have ignored extending a favour to the household of Saul. However, he recalled the good deeds of his friend Jonathan. A time like this is a good one to reflect on the goodnees of God and share his love through kindly deeds. "Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by this some have entertained angels without knowing it" ( Hebrews 13:2).

Prayer today: Lord Father God of Abraham, maker of heaven and earth, I thank you for all the blessings in my life and with your help may I show kindness to those in need as a way of thanksgiving, this I pray in Jesus's name.
