God Is Good!
“Taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him.” — Psalm 34:8
Whenever someone is good to us, we stand to benefit. Consider a patient in urgent need of medical attention who finds a nurse in a crowded hospital willing to set aside her normal duties to provide emergency care. Or imagine someone facing a harsh sentence, only for a compassionate officer to plead on their behalf and secure a reduced punishment. In more desperate situations, those facing hunger may unexpectedly receive a basket of food from a kind-hearted person. We rejoice when such goodness comes our way.
The Bible declares, “Oh, give thanks to the LORD, for He is good! For His mercy endures forever” (1 Chronicles 16:34). The goodness of God is not an abstract concept. Each one of us can point to moments when we personally experienced His goodness. There was that job no one thought you would get, yet somehow it came your way. There was that tax bill that was waived when everyone, including yourself, thought there was no hope. There was that night when you were stranded on the highway and a stranger appeared out of nowhere to help you reach safety.
The Scriptures reveal God’s goodness to ordinary people facing extraordinary challenges. Rachel was trapped in a childless marriage and endured the scorn of her elder sister and co-wife, Leah. Yet after much sorrow and tribulation, “God remembered Rachel; he listened to her and enabled her to conceive. She became pregnant and gave birth to a son and said, ‘God has taken away my disgrace’” (Genesis 30:22–23). God was good to her.
God was also good to Rachel’s son, Joseph. Falsely accused, imprisoned, and forgotten by a fellow prisoner whom he had helped, Joseph’s future seemed hopeless. Yet in a single day, God turned everything around. Pharaoh summoned him from prison and declared, “I hereby put you in charge of the whole land of Egypt” (Genesis 41:41).
The God who lifted Joseph from a dungeon to a palace is still at work today. His Word assures us, “The LORD is good to all; he has compassion on all he has made” (Psalm 145:9). There are seasons in life when we might feel abandoned and overlooked. There are moments when your name might be considered for a life-changing opportunity alongside many highly qualified candidates. Yet the Lord chooses you, just as He chose David from among his older brothers and anointed him to replace Saul as king. Why? Because He is good.
Whatever challenge you face today, remember that God’s goodness has not changed. The God who remembered Rachel, promoted Joseph, and established David is still working in the lives of His people. Trust Him, take refuge in Him, and expect His goodness to be revealed in your life.
Prayer
Lord Almighty Father, what a blessing it is to know that we serve a good God who cares for us intimately and whose goodness never fails. Help me always to look to You, trust in Your promises, and wait patiently for Your goodness to be revealed in my life. Deliver me, bless me, and draw me closer to You each day. I pray this in the name of Jesus Christ!
