“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you may have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world” - John 16:33 (NIV)

Why did the Lord have to warn his disciples that they were to experience troubles? A quick answer here is that the Lord knew well what was at hand and didn’t want to set them up for a huge surprise.

Certainly the going was never easy. All the 12 disciples of Jesus would die of martyrdom. The early followers were met with all kinds of tribulations and severe persecutions.

Where some would have been discouraged, the knowledge that no matter what came their way they would all come out victorious must have been comforting. We too therefore should not be so upset when we encounter challenges. Long before the Lord knew what awaited any of us. And more than anything we are already victorious.

Prayer for today: Lord Father in heaven, God of Abraham, may I not be discouraged when I am faced with suffering for ultimate victory belongs to those who believe and trust in you!
