“The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you—they are full of the Spirit and life.” (John 6:63)
In a certain neighbourhood, whenever a child made a mistake, the adults would unleash a torrent of harsh words: “You’re stupid… You’ll never amount to anything.” Sadly, many of those children grew up to fulfil exactly what was spoken over them—joining gangs, turning to crime, and eventually ending up in prison. Words are never spoken in a vacuum. They carry power.
When Peter and John were going up to the temple to pray, a lame man asked them for money. Peter looked at him and declared, “Silver or gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk!” (Acts 3:6). Those words carried life. The man who had never walked stood up and walked.
Likewise while on a mission journey, Paul and Silas encountered a young girl tormented by an evil spirit. After many days, Paul turned and commanded, “In the name of Jesus Christ I command you to come out of her!” (Acts 16:18). At that very moment, the spirit left her. Paul’s words of life liberated her.
Jesus Himself demonstrated the authority of words. He cursed a barren fig tree with the words, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again” (Mark 11:14), and the tree withered. Yet He also spoke blessing—lifting His hands over His disciples before ascending to heaven, blessing them as He departed (Luke 24:50-51).
He raised Lazarus from the dead through spoken words. Jesus did not merely think or wish for the miracle. He cried out in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” (John 11:43), and the dead man walked out of the tomb.
Back to our neighborhood rife with gangs. Imagine if the adults there had consistently spoken words of success, purpose, and destiny over those children. How different might their lives have been? Today, choose to speak life. Proclaim victory over every challenge you are facing. Speak success, favour, and breakthroughs over your family, your children, and those around you. Your words are powerful seeds — they will produce a harvest.
Prayer: Heavenly Father God of creation, thank You that the tongue has the power to bring life or destruction. Help me today to use my words to glorify You and to bless others. I speak success, victory, and breakthroughs over every challenge I am facing, believing that there is life and power in the words I declare. I pray this in the mighty name of Jesus Christ!
