“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind” (2 Timothy 1:7)
Goliath was a Philistine giant who towered over everyone around him. In those days, battles were largely physical, and fighting against someone as powerful as Goliath appeared to be a non-starter. Goliath was fully aware of his formidable strength and used it to intimidate the Israelites. “Goliath stood and shouted to the ranks of Israel, ‘Why do you come out and line up for battle? Am I not a Philistine, and are you not the servants of Saul? Choose a man and have him come down to me. If he is able to fight and kill me, we will become your subjects; but if I overcome him and kill him, you will become our subjects and serve us” (1 Samuel 17:8–11).
In life, we can all face different kinds of giants. There are financial giants, health giants, workplace giants, and sometimes family giants. These challenges can appear so overwhelming that we become afraid, discouraged and uncertain about the future.
How do we respond when we are faced with such giants? The example of David overcoming Goliath is instructive. David did not look at Goliath through the eyes of fear. He looked at him through the eyes of faith. He knew that the battle did not belong to him alone; it belonged to God. David said to the Philistine: “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied” (1 Samuel 17:45). And with a sling and a stone, David brought down the giant who had terrified an entire army.
Perhaps today you are facing a giant that appears too big for you to overcome. It may be a financial problem, a health challenge, a difficult relationship, a workplace situation, or an uncertain future. Whatever the giant may be, remember that you do not face it alone. God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love and a sound mind. Therefore, do not allow fear to paralyse you. Look beyond the giant and look up to God.
Reflection: Is there a giant standing before me today? Do I believe that, with God, I can overcome it?
Prayer: Lord Almighty, Father God, whatever giant stands in my way today, help me not to be afraid. Give me the courage to face my challenges with faith and confidence in You. Empower me to overcome every obstacle and bring victory and glory to Your name. This I pray in Jesus’s name!
