“and call on me in the day of trouble;  I will deliver you, and you will honor me” ( Psalm 50: 15).

Prophet Moses, King David, Apostle Paul have all one thing in common. It is called courage.

When Moses walked up to Pharaoh Remesis, the monarch whom he had fled from forty years ago, terrified of him, and spoke up to him, “Let my people go” ( Exodus 5:2); that was a courageous moment. The king of Egypt could have unleashed all his weapons against him there and then. But Moses stood firm. He knew a more powerful Almighty God was behind him!

King David was only but a youth who decided to go up and face a mighty giant called Goliath. In fact, Goliath, “looked David over and saw that he was little more than a boy, glowing with health and handsome, and he despised him.  He said to David, “Am I a dog, that you come at me with sticks?” And the Philistine cursed David by his gods.  “Come here,” he said, “and I’ll give your flesh to the birds and the wild animals!” ( 1 Samuel 17:42-44). David stood his ground because he knew Almighty God was behind him.

When as a prisoner, Paul was brought before the Chief Priest and all the members of the Sanhedrin, he dared them without flinching, announcing, “My brothers, I have fulfilled my duty to God in all good conscience to this day” ( Acts 23:1). At this the high priest Ananias ordered those standing near Paul to slap him. But Paul stood firm. “Then Paul said to him, “God will strike you, you whitewashed wall!” ( vv 2-3).

Courage has been defined as “the ability to do something that frightens one”; it is bravery in the face of overwhelming odds. A person might be outnumbered yet refuse to balk down. We come across courage in ordinary life situations where a bully using his power pushes out the weak, only for one small fellow to stand up to him.

Moses, David, Paul and a cast of Biblical stars all had courage because they knew the power of the Almighty God.

Friend, should you be faced with any situation where you are outnumbered and the odds seem all stuck against you, child of God, have courage! Just as the Almighty God delivered Moses, David, and Paul, you too will emerge victorious.

Prayer today: Lord Father God of Abraham, maker of heaven and earth, because of faith in you I have courage, knowing that your power is greater than all the forces out there in the world, to bring me victory in whatever circmstances, this I pray in Jesus’ name.

"And your life will be brighter than the noonday; it’s darkness will be like the morning. And you will feel secure, because there is hope; you will look around and take your rest in security”  (Job 11:17-19.)

Philosophers and writers have long pointed out that without hope mankind would long be gone. The philosopher Victor Frankly who survived the Holocaust where he lost his entire family found hope was the most important weapon that enabled him come out alive. He wrote, “He who has a why to live for can bear almost any how!”

Hope can sustain any of us through the darkest of times. This is what happened to Job when he lost everything he possessed. “Though he slay me, I will hope in him; yet I will argue my ways to his face” (Job 13:15).

King David when he was being pursued by his enemies never lost hope. “For you have been my hope, sovereign Lord, my confidence since my youth” (Psalm 71:5). The Apostle Paul who faced countless perilous times during his missionary journeys including jail and shipwrecks never lost hope. Writing to the Corinthians he reminded them, “He has delivered us from such a deadly peril, and he will deliver us again. On him we have set our hope that he will continue to deliver us, as you help us by your prayers” (2 Cor 1:10-11).

As believers God has given us hope that our lives are not empty and meaningless, like so many others. He has given us the hope to carry us through the lowest of moments. “I wait for the Lord, my whole being waits, and in His word I put my hope” (Psalm 130:5).
Today, may that hope that you have in Christ sustain you through whatever circumstances you may be facing.

Prayer for today: Lord Father God of Abraham, maker of heaven and earth, today I pray in the wonderful name of Jesus that the hope I have in you lifts me up and sustains me in all situations as a conquer, in whose name I pray.
