God's time is perfect

"But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day" (2 Peter 3:8).

At 90 a woman called Sarah married to a wealthy herdsman called Abraham pushing into 100 had not given birth to a child, in spite of this couple's desire. If she had not wished perhaps that would not be a problem. But she and her husband longed for that child and quite desperately. Though the population density in Israel was not as high then as now around her must have been many who would have pitied her, adding to her grief. Together with her aging husband they stoically bore through this loneliness. But any can imagine Sarah spending many a restless nights watching the years go by.

Then one day God visited Abraham. "The Lord said, “I will be sure to return to you at this time next year. And your wife Sarah will have a son" ( Gen 18:10). Because she knew her biology better ( or she thought) one can imagine Sarah's reaction once she overhead this message. "So Sarah laughed to herself as she thought, “After I am worn out and my lord is old, will I now have this pleasure?” ( vv 12).

Inspite of her reservations, "Now the Lord was gracious to Sarah as he had said, and the Lord did for Sarah what he had promised. Sarah became pregnant and bore a son to Abraham in his old age, at the very time God had promised him" ( Gen 21:1-2).

Perhaps you have a longing that seems to have delayed. Yet in the scheme of God there is a time for everything. Like Sarah you might be thinking it is past age. But that is of God to decide and not you. One day the Lord will bring you a "sweet pleasure" and all the years of apparent waste will bear to you their full meaning. And you will live to enjoy that pleasure just as God has willed.

Prayer today: Lord Father God of Abraham, maker of heaven and earth, you know my heart's desire, which I commit to you, trusting no matter the time, one day you will grant me that sweet pleasure, this I pray in Jesus's name.
