“So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” — John 8:36

Freedom is often celebrated in the world as the achievement of political goals, such as African nations gaining independence from colonial rule. Throughout history, revolutions have been fought to free people from oppression and establish governments that protect the rights and dignity of their citizens. Some, like Nelson Mandela, devoted much of their lives to securing freedom for others by helping end apartheid in South Africa.

While such freedom is noble and worth celebrating, the Bible speaks of an even greater freedom—the freedom that comes through Jesus Christ. It is the freedom to live a victorious life, released from every form of spiritual bondage and delivered from physical and emotional torment.

Luke tells us of a woman who had been “crippled by a spirit for eighteen years. She was bent over and could not straighten up at all” (Luke 13:11). Imagine the physical pain and emotional anguish she endured. We can only wonder how many times she sought relief without success. Yet everything changed the day she encountered Jesus. Seeing her, “He called her forward and said to her, ‘Woman, you are set free from your infirmity.’ Then He put His hands on her, and immediately she straightened up and praised God” (Luke 13:12–13). At last, she experienced true freedom.

For eighteen years, a spirit of infirmity had oppressed her, denying her the joy and fullness of life that God intended. Although her story took place centuries ago, that evil spirit still seeks to oppress people today. It may attack one through physical illness, emotional wounds, fear, hopelessness, bitterness, addiction, lack or circumstances that seem to cripple progress and rob people of their God-given purpose such as rejection. Jesus warned us of this when He said, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full” (John 10:10).

The Apostle Paul knew how to deal with this deceitful spirit. As he and Silas preached the gospel, they were repeatedly followed by a slave girl who was possessed by an evil spirit. Finally, Paul turned and commanded, “In the name of Jesus Christ I command you to come out of her!” At that moment the spirit left her (Acts 16:18). Once again, the power of Christ brought freedom where there had been bondage.

The freedom Christ offers is unlike any freedom the world can give. It is freedom from the chains of sin, guilt, fear, and every spiritual bondage. It is freedom that restores hope, brings healing, and enables us to walk in victory. When we repent of our sins and receive Jesus Christ as our Lord and Saviour, He breaks every chain that has held us captive and gives us a new life through the power of His Holy Spirit.

Today, whatever may be weighing you down, remember the promise of Jesus: “If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” His freedom is complete, lasting, and available to everyone who comes to Him in faith.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for the true freedom that is found only in Your Son, Jesus Christ. Thank You for breaking the chains of sin and every form of spiritual bondage through His death and resurrection. By the power of Your Holy Spirit, set me free from everything that hinders me from living the victorious life You have prepared for me. In Jesus’ name I pray!
