“For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.” (2 Timothy 1:7)
In many African households, gecko lizards are familiar and common inhabitants. However, for someone raised in a Western home, encountering a crawling lizard for the first time can be a frightening experience, conjuring up all kinds of alarming thoughts. Yet, in reality, these house lizards are harmless and even beneficial, as they feed on insects that may affect the cleanliness and hygiene of a home.
Fear is sometimes like the reaction of someone who encounters a harmless house lizard without prior experience. The mind magnifies the situation, creating panic where there is no real danger. When God spoke through the prophet Isaiah, saying, “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand” (Isaiah 41:10), He understood how easily fear can overwhelm the human heart.
Yet, we have no reason to live in fear because God’s presence is our assurance: “The LORD himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged” (Deuteronomy 31:8).
We see this truth in the life of Elisha when the Arameans attacked Israel. When Elisha’s servant woke up early one morning and saw an enemy army he became terrified and cried out, “Oh no, my lord! What shall we do?” (2 Kings 6:15).
But Elisha, who understood the power and presence of God, calmly responded, “Don’t be afraid. Those who are with us are more than those who are with them” (2 Kings 6:16).
Then Elisha prayed that God would open the servant’s eyes. “Then the LORD opened the servant’s eyes, and he looked and saw the hills full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha” (2 Kings 6:17). The servant had been overwhelmed by what he saw with his physical eyes, but God revealed a greater reality that was beyond human sight. Indeed, when the enemy advanced, Elisha prayed to the Lord, and God struck the army with blindness (2 Kings 6:18). The servant’s fear had been unnecessary because God was already at work on their behalf.
The Apostle Paul once noted: “What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?” (Romans 8:31). When fear challenges us, we can stand firm because we know that God is with us and that His power is greater than every challenge we face.
Today, if there is any situation bringing fear, anxiety, or worry into your life, look to God. Stand with faith and declare: “No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us” (Romans 8:37).
Prayer: Heavenly Father, there are moments when situations around us seem overwhelming and fear begins to take hold of our hearts. But whenever I feel afraid, help me to look to You, knowing that there is no power greater than Yours. Grant me courage to face every obstacle with confidence, trusting that victory belongs to me because You are with me. This I pray in Jesus’ name!
