God the helper !
“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble” ( Psalm 46:1)
Hagar was distraught. After Abraham was forced to abandon his and her son, Ishmael, left in the wilderness, out of food, she feared the worst. But her baby sobbing, “God heard the boy crying, and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven and said to her, “What is the matter, Hagar? Do not be afraid; God has heard the boy crying as he lies there” ( Gen 21:17).
And yes we know, “God was with the boy as he grew up. He lived in the desert and became an archer. While he was living in the Desert of Paran, his mother got a wife for him from Egypt” ( v 20-21).
A child lost out in the wilderness with a homeless mother rescued by God!
In another event when Isaac came of age, Abraham decided to send out his servant to go back among his people to look for wife. We are told the servant first prayed as he set out on his mission. “Then he prayed, “Lord, God of my master Abraham, make me successful today, and show kindness to my master Abraham.”
Genesis 24:12. The Lord heard his prayer and the servant returned from a successful mission with Rebekah. “So she became his wife, and he loved her..( vv 67).
While it is true that with time Ishmael and Isaac would go on to father rival nations, what we see here is that our God is never removed from our plight and cares for the needy. From both we see a God who is interested in our life’s affairs. Whether it is a child out there in the wilderness crying with hunger or a young man in search of wife, our God is not removed from these needs. He comes down to our rescue, brings relief and joy to us.
Prayer today. Lord Father God where I find myself locked in a situation that seems hopeless I turn to you, that you bring deliverance and the blessing that only comes from you. This I pray in Jesus’s name.
