God the Deliverer

“The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer” (2 Samuel 22:2).

Deliverance is needed when we find ourselves bound by a condition that holds us back and prevents us from moving forward. This bondage can be physical, as in the case of the woman who suffered from bleeding for twelve years. “She had been subject to bleeding for twelve years. She had suffered a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent all she had, yet instead of getting better she grew worse” (Mark 5:25-26).

Yet deliverance is not only physical. It can also be financial or material. The widow of Zarephath was in such a desperate situation. When Elijah asked her for water and bread, she replied: “As surely as the Lord your God lives, I don’t have any bread—only a handful of flour in a jar and a little olive oil in a jug. I am gathering a few sticks to take home and make a meal for myself and my son, that we may eat it—and die” (1 Kings 17:12).

She had lost all hope and resigned herself to death.

In both cases, God brought deliverance. The bleeding woman pressed through the crowd in faith and touched the hem of Jesus’ garment. “Immediately her bleeding stopped and she felt in her body that she was freed from her suffering” (Mark 5:29).

For the widow, the Lord spoke through Elijah: “Don’t be afraid. Go home and do as you have said. But first make a small loaf of bread for me from what you have… For this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘The jar of flour will not be used up and the jug of oil will not run dry until the day the Lord sends rain on the land’” (1 Kings 17:13-14). She obeyed, and God miraculously provided for her, her son, and Elijah every day.

No matter the nature of our bondage—whether physical, financial, or otherwise—we serve a God who delights in setting His children free. When we bring our situation to Him in faith and trust in His power, He is able to deliver us.

Prayer: Lord Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, I bring before You every condition that is hindering my progress—whether in my body, my finances, or any other area of my life. You are my Deliverer. Break every chain, set me free, and help me walk in the joy of abundant life in You. I pray this in Jesus’ name!
