“Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” — 2 Corinthians 9:7

Giving is in the very nature of God. We know this because Scripture says, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16). Without that act of giving, there would be no salvation.

We sometimes mistakenly associate giving with abundance, yet Scripture teaches that giving is a matter of the heart. Jesus once pointed to a widow who gave far less than the wealthy people around her. He said, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on” (Mark 12:43–44).

On another occasion, Jesus told a rich man who desired eternal life, “Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” At this, the man’s face fell and he went away sad because he had many possessions (Mark 10:21–22). The rich man found it difficult to give because of his attachment to his wealth.

God never overlooks our giving, however small it may seem. He rewards those who give generously and willingly. Jesus said, “Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you” (Luke 6:38).

The blessings we receive from giving may come in the form of material provision, but they may also appear in less obvious ways. Sometimes the blessing is good health. It may be a supportive community of friends and family. God may honor our generosity by protecting us from harm and opening doors we never expected.

A giving heart reflects the character of God. No act of generosity goes unnoticed by Him, and no opportunity to give should be taken lightly.

Prayer: Lord Almighty Father, thank You for the greatest gift You gave us—Your Son, who gave His life for the salvation of all who believe in Him. I pray that You bless me with a generous and cheerful heart. Help me to give willingly and faithfully, trusting You to honor my giving in ways beyond my understanding. This I pray in Jesus’ name!
