“But I have this against you, that you have abandoned the love you had at first” (Revelation 2:4).

Early in his life King David was one person who just couldn’t wait being involved. The Baganda have a saying- “nga’ talutumila mwana,” - loosely meaning: “he was not a man to rely on errand boys!” Thus, once he saw Goliath threatening invincibility David took him on personally ( I Samuel 17). Recruited by King Saul he personally led the Israelites into battle that crowds ended up provocatively chanting, “As they danced, they sang: “Saul has slain his thousands, and David his tens of thousands” ( I Samuel 18:7).

Now, as David’s stuture rose, he tired of his old battle field action packed life. He had seen it all and, anyway, he had others now to do the fighting for him! So, as it were, in one long battle he dispatched over his General Joab to lead the army while he lounged at home. Things started to happen. One day he spotted a married beautiful woman and before long he had snatched her. This was after using his privileged position to get her husband Uriah who, himself was away at battle, get killed! It was a grievous sin which God made David pay for dearly!

A lesson for us here. Any of us using our gifts could start out by being very active in ministry life. We cant wait to attend church where we eagerly participate in praise and worship. Perhaps we volunteer to be ushers or lead Sunday School. At home we lead family prayers. But as God blesses us and we rise in stature certain things in our prior life become “too small for us!” We now miss church (“too busy”) and have no time for weekly cell Bible studies, because of other “bigger meetings” at office.

There is a danger here. As we draw away from our “first love” we become exposed. No longer actively involved in the Lord’s work, like David, we become easy target.

As you rise stay close to God by being immersed in his work, including actively participating in ministry, just as before, other than merely delegating because you are now “too big”! Only one helpful way to keep the enemy at bay!

Prayer today: Lord Father God of Abraham, maker of heaven and earth, help me stay ever close to you and never “too busy” through distractions caused by change in life’s circumstances that take me far away from you, this I pray in Jesus’s name.
