Every role is powerful
“In his grace, God has given us different gifts for doing certain things well..” ( Romans 12:6)
Every believer has a role to play, in God’s kingdom, some of an outsized nature and others less prominent but no less important. For example, where there is the Apostle Paul, there is a rich cast of multiple lesser known figures who enabled him excel. At one stage in his ministry, he was assisted by a “woman from the city of Thyatira named Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth. She was a worshiper of God. The Lord opened her heart to respond to Paul’s message. When she and the members of her household were baptized, she invited us to her home. “If you consider me a believer in the Lord,” she said, “come and stay at my house.” And she persuaded us” ( Acts 16:14-15). This businesswoman would then use her resources to support the ministry of Paul.
Equally so, the Lord Jesus had lesser significant supporters of his ministry. “As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him” ( Luke 10:38). This was a powerful encounter of one working in the background to assist Jesus in his ministry.
While we know of Abraham as the father of our faith, he had always a constant companion Sarah with whom he traveled with through the wilderness till he settled his family. “As he was about to enter Egypt, he said to his wife Sarai, “I know what a beautiful woman you are. When the Egyptians see you, they will say, ‘This is his wife.’ Then they will kill me but will let you live. Say you are my sister, so that I will be treated well for your sake and my life will be spared because of you” ( Genesis 12:11-13). Given that Abraham had to this length it shows the significance of this companionship.
What is your role? Maybe you have been feeling less confident of yourself because yours is not as pronounced. However, each role is as important as Paul reminds us, “There is one body, but it has many parts. But all its many parts make up one body… If all the parts were the same, how could there be a body? As it is, there are many parts. But there is only one body…You are the body of Christ. Each one of you is a part of it” ( I Cor 12: 12-27). As long as your role is building up the body of Christ, it is just as important.
Prayer today: Lord Father God of Abraham, maker of heaven and earth, in your kingdom you have a role for everyone of us and now I pray to find it and serve you faithfully, this I pray in Jesus’s name.
