“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from unrighteousness” - 1 John 1: 9 (NIV)
There are millions of people world over who are enslaved with the disease of alcoholism. It has taken over the power of their lives and ruined their jobs and families. What can free them?
Early in 1935 an organization was co-founded by two alcoholics in the US, Bill Wilson and Bob Smith. To cure them of this disease ruining their lives these two started groups that would meet regularly and hold members accountable. The members would have to start each meeting by reciting a 12 prayer point list.
This prayer admits how one is powerless and only God can free such hopelessness. It calls on one to take a decision to turn over the care of one’s life to the power of God. By reciting this prayer the organization has helped millions world over be freed of alcoholism.
Unfortunately lately there are those who have taken issue with this Christian approach of confessing weakness, in spite of its obvious results. But no matter what, yes course, this is what the Gospel of Jesus Christ is all about. An admission that one has come to the end and only by confessing of his sin and accepting salvation in Christ can one’s life be freed of any oppressive dark power.
The benefits are so clear and certain. However much one may protest.
Prayer for today: Lord Father in heaven, today I pray in the mighty name of Jesus of Nazareth that you cure me of any power holding me down by surrendering my whole life to you!
