Hasten, O God, to save me; come quickly, LORD, to help me.” Psalms 70:1
King David in many of his prayers often cried out to God by pleading to him to come quickly to his rescue. Like here: “LORD, do not forsake me; do not be far from me, my God. Come quickly to help me, my Lord and my Savior” (Psalm 38:21-22). Elsewhere we see him plead, “I call to you, LORD, come quickly to me; hear me when I call to you. May my prayer be set before you like incense; may the lifting up of my hands be like the evening sacrifice” (Psalms 141:1-2 ).
When we look closely at David’s life there was a reason why his prayers had a ring of desperation. His life was often in danger with Saul trying to kill him: “Saul had a spear in his hand and he hurled it, saying to himself, “I’ll pin David to the wall.” But David eluded him twice.” (1 Samuel 18:10-11). David had to flee. In exile he fell soon on hard times. To escape being arrested, “So he pretended to be insane in their presence; and while he was in their hands he acted like a madman, making marks on the doors of the gate and letting saliva run down his beard” ( I Samuel 21:13). More later, he would be overthrown by his own son, Absolom, and forced on the run ( 2 Samuel 15).
Like David you too could find yourself caught in a desperate situation. It could be a case where you are out funds, under siege from those who want to snatch your property, a certain sickness that threatens to ruin you. Life often leads us to those knots where we need a quick answer. No tommorow; but today! But like David, we thank God, we have not just somewhere to run out to but cry out quite boldly that we need a quick answer.
As we know David’s cry was not in vain and God delivered him. Whatever your situation is, do not hesitate to go to God, and cry out boldly: “Come quickly, LORD, and answer me, for my spirit fails” ( Psalm 143:7). He will answer you!
Reflection: Am I caught up in a situation where I need a quick answer and delivery. Have I cried out to God for his quick response.
Prayer: Lord Almighty God, you know my situation and how I need your quick help. I cry out to you that come quickly to my rescue for you are a deliverer who hears the prayers of your children! And thanks you have heard me. This I pray in Jesus’s name.
