“I delight greatly in the Lord; my soul rejoices in my God. For he has clothed me with garments of salvation and arrayed me in a robe of his righteousness…” — Isaiah 61:10
There was a time in many local schools when pupils were encouraged to speak English by an unusual form of punishment. Anyone caught speaking in the vernacular was made to wear a coarse sack. It was a particularly unenviable garment, reeking of shame for failing to speak the King’s language. The unfortunate pupil would hurriedly look for another unsuspecting child to catch speaking the vernacular so the sack could be passed on. What a relief it was to be rid of that garment—and what a burden it became for the next victim.
Life, too, sometimes forces people into garments of shame. Consider the young wife who longs for children but, despite years of prayer and effort, remains childless. She may become the subject of gossip and ridicule, clothed in a garment of shame she never deserved. Think of the respected executive who suddenly loses a prestigious position and is left out in the cold. Overnight, the applause disappears, and the garment of honour is replaced by one of humiliation. Worse still is the person falsely accused and imprisoned, stripped of reputation and dignity, and made to wear a garment of shame for a crime never committed.
One of the glorious reasons Christ came was to remove that garment of shame and clothe all who trust in Him with the robe of His righteousness. No one delights more than Satan in seeing God’s children burdened by shame. Scripture calls him “the accuser of our brothers and sisters” (Revelation 12:10), for accusation is one of his greatest weapons against believers. He wants God’s people to live defeated, condemned, and afraid.
The Bible gives us a powerful picture of God’s response in the vision of Joshua the high priest: “Now Joshua was dressed in filthy clothes as he stood before the angel. The angel said to those who were standing before him, ‘Take off his filthy clothes.’ Then he said to Joshua, ‘See, I have taken away your sin, and I will put fine garments on you" (Zechariah 3:3–4). What a beautiful exchange! God removed Joshua’s filthy garments and replaced them with clean ones.
Our Lord Jesus knew of being stripped of his rightful garment for shame. At His crucifixion, the soldiers cast lots for His clothing, leaving Him exposed to public humiliation. Yet shame did not have the final word. On the third day, Christ rose victorious from the grave, triumphant over sin, death, and Satan. Today He is exalted, clothed with glory and honour, and He freely shares that victory with all who belong to Him.
A garment of shame leaves one weary, bowed down, discouraged, and robbed of the confidence to stand tall. But God delights in clothing His children with honour, dignity, and righteousness. Today just know the garment of shame the enemy has tried to place upon you does not belong to you. Refuse it! Lift your eyes to Christ. Ask Him to remove it and clothe you with His bright garment of salvation and righteousness—a garment that brings joy, restores dignity, and proclaims His victory. Walk confidently in the identity He has given you, for you are a beloved child of God!
Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You that the garment of shame is not my portion. Today I look to You and ask that You remove every garment of guilt, fear, disgrace, and condemnation, and clothe me instead with Your garment of salvation and Your robe of righteousness. Help me to walk confidently as Your child, knowing that Christ has already conquered sin, shame, death, and Satan. May my life reflect the honour, joy, and victory You have given me through Jesus Christ. In His precious name I pray!
