“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” — Philippians 4:13

In recent years Uganda has been producing world-class athletes who have gone on to smash world records. In 2024 Joshua Cheptegei won gold and set an Olympic record in the 10,000 m at the Paris Olympics. Jacob Kiplimo has won the senior men’s title at the World Cross Country Championships. Stephen Kiprotich won Olympic gold in the marathon at the London Games. Halimah Nakaayi won the women’s 800 m gold at the World Athletics Championships in 2019.

If you were to ask any of these great athletes what is the secret behind their success, high on the list would be controlling their thought patterns. Every athlete who goes into a race must start by thinking positively of himself or herself as a winner. Positive thoughts shape the behavioural patterns that lead to success. Successful athletes decide what they eat, force their bodies to train even when they do not feel like it, and never allow themselves to be brought down by despondent thoughts. The mark of a great athlete is the willpower to conquer the odds — and that willpower begins with positive belief in the mind.

A particularly important truth about our thought patterns is that God has given every person the power to control what he or she thinks. One can decide to think of oneself as a loser or as a winner. The person who embraces thoughts of being a loser loses hope of rising up and training for victory. Likewise, those who think of themselves as winners will rise to work towards victory. Faced with difficulties they remain upbeat because they continue to believe in victory. They do not allow worry and negative thoughts to get the better of them. They remember, “What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?” ( Romans 8:31).

However, every believer ought to know that our minds are open fields open to attack by negative thoughts. We need to protect our minds from such thoughts because of the poisonous effect they can have on us. At the same time we should continually feed our minds with positive thoughts. As the Bible says, “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it” (Proverbs 4:23).

Reflection: Do I allow negative thoughts to take my mind captive and overwhelm me, instead of letting God’s Word give me hope and energise me?

Prayer for today: Lord Father God of Abraham, today I surrender to You all my thoughts. Guard me against every poisonous attack and help me proclaim victory in Your name. This I pray in the victorious name of the Lord Jesus Christ!
