“A joyful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones”-Proverbs 17:22 (ESV)
Every life has its ups and downs. Sometimes, events of misfortune come our way, leaving us discouraged and broken. We may experience personal tragedies such as the loss of a loved one, disappointment, failure, or circumstances that are beyond our control. No one is immune to upsetting events or to those moments when things do not go according to plan. Just as there are good days, there are also difficult days in every life.
Unfortunately, there is often a false belief that children of God should not experience upsetting events, and that when they do, something must be wrong with them or their faith. Yet the Bible makes it clear that believers are not exempt from the troubles of this world. Indeed, there is an enemy who seeks to steal our joy. We are warned: “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world” ( John 16:33).
What matters, therefore, is that whatever comes our way to bring us down, we do not allow the enemy to rob us of our joy. Jesus warned His disciples: “Be on guard that your hearts will not be weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of life, and that day will close on you suddenly like a trap” (Luke 21:34).
Joyfulness is a condition we are called to pursue. Paul writes: “Always be joyful. Never stop praying. Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus” (1 Thessalonians 5:16–18).
This does not mean denying the reality of the painful experiences we encounter in life. It means refusing to allow those experiences to have the final word over our hearts. After all, Christ Himself warned us: “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart, I have overcome the world” (John 16:33).
Joy is one of the blessings of the Christian life. It is not merely dependent on favourable circumstances; it flows from our relationship with God and the work of the Holy Spirit within us. Scripture says: “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit” (Romans 15:13).
Today, whatever may be making you feel down, choose joy. Your circumstances may not change immediately, but you can choose where to place your trust. Lift your eyes to God and remember that He is with you even in the difficult moments.
Reflection: Do I maintain a spirit of joy even through hardship and unfavorable circumstances!
Prayer for today: Lord Almighty God, Father in Heaven, today I pray in the beloved name of Jesus that You fill my life with the joy of the Holy Spirit. Help me not to allow the troubles and disappointments of life to steal my joy. Give me the grace to rejoice even in difficult circumstances, knowing that You are with me and that You have overcome the world. This I pray in Jesus’s name!
