“I would have lost heart, unless I had believed that I would see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait on the Lord; be of good courage, and He shall strengthen your heart; wait, I say, on the Lord!”- Psalm 27:13-14
Have you ever been caught in a violent storm — hurricane-force winds, driving rain, and the threat of tornadoes? How did you respond when everything around you felt out of control?
In Acts 27 we find the Apostle Paul in just such a situation. He warned the centurion, the ship owner, and the captain not to set sail, but they ignored him. What followed was disaster. Around AD 60, sea travel was primitive. There were no compasses, no weather forecasts, and no life jackets. For many days neither sun nor stars appeared. The 276 people on board despaired. Luke records, “When neither sun nor stars appeared for many days and the storm continued raging, we finally gave up all hope of being saved” (Acts 27:20).
Yet one man remained calm. Paul had already received a word from God that every life would be spared. Seeing the fear and hopelessness around him, he stood up and spoke courage into the situation: “Last night an angel of the God to whom I belong and whom I serve stood beside me and said, ‘Do not be afraid, Paul. You must stand trial before Caesar; and God has graciously given you the lives of all who sail with you.’ So keep up your courage, men, for I have faith in God that it will happen just as he told me” (Acts 27:23-25).
That is the heart of the matter. In the middle of a life-threatening storm, Paul called the sailors to faith instead of despair. The same God who spoke then still speaks now. We face financial storms, relational storms, storms of grief and loss. Yet God continues to say, “Do not lose heart. Keep up your courage. I will see you through.”
After delivering the message of hope, Paul advised the captain to look for a place to run aground. This time they listened — and all 276 lives were saved.
Reflection: When storms come, do I look up to God, or do I look only at the waves?
Prayer for today: Lord Almighty, God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, Just as You spoke hope to Paul in the midst of the storm and preserved every life on that ship, I look to You today. Strengthen my heart. Deliver me and those around me safely through every storm we face, for the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ!
