“But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” (1 Corinthians 15:57, NIV)
When David stepped forward to face Goliath, he stood before a giant who seemed impossible to defeat. The army of Israel had almost resigned itself to its fate. Fully aware of their fear, Goliath taunted them day after day: “Choose a man and have him come down to me. If he is able to fight and kill me, we will become your subjects; but if I overcome him and kill him, you will become our subjects and serve us.” (1 Samuel 17:8–9).
Here was a problem that appeared impossible to overcome. “For forty days the Philistine came forward every morning and evening and took his stand” (v.16), relentlessly intimidating Israel with his threats. Then David arrived. Unlike everyone else, he believed in a victorious God. He asked, “Who is this uncircumcised Philistine that he should defy the armies of the living God?” (v.26). Armed with nothing more than a sling, five smooth stones, and unwavering faith in God, David confronted the giant and brought him down with a single stone.
Life often confronts us with giants of our own. They tower over us, appearing too powerful to overcome. A family faces eviction while the bank account is empty. A serious illness demands expensive treatment when there is no steady income. A beloved child is trapped in alcohol or drug addiction. A court case pits you against an opponent who seems to have the resources to manipulate the system. These are the Goliaths of our time—problems that appear formidable and beyond our ability to conquer.
As if their size were not enough, these giants taunt us, whispering that we should give up because defeat is inevitable. But we serve a victorious God. Long before David, Joshua and Caleb also faced giants. When Moses sent twelve spies into Canaan, ten returned overwhelmed by what they had seen. “The people who live there are powerful, and the cities are fortified and very large… We even saw the descendants of Anak there” (Numbers 13:28). Yet Joshua and Caleb saw the situation differently because they trusted in a victorious God. They declared, “If the Lord is pleased with us, He will lead us into that land, a land flowing with milk and honey, and will give it to us” (Numbers 14:8). God honoured their faith and, in time, gave Israel victory over the very giants that had terrified the others.
Perhaps today you have awakened to giants that seem determined to overwhelm you. Humanly speaking, they are beyond your strength. Yet the good news is that our God is still the Victorious God. The same God who enabled David to defeat Goliath, and who rewarded the faith of Joshua and Caleb with victory, is still at work today. Place your confidence in Him, stand firm in faith, and trust that He will accomplish what seems impossible, for He never fails.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, when I wake up to problems that loom like giants, seemingly impossible to overcome, I refuse to surrender to fear or despair. I know that in Your perfect time You will demonstrate Your power and lead me into the victory that brings glory to Your name. Strengthen my faith, help me to persevere, and teach me to trust You completely, knowing that You are the Victorious God who never fails. Through Jesus Christ our Lord I pray!
