“For with God nothing shall be impossible.” — Luke 1:37 (KJV)
When the angel Gabriel appeared to Mary and told her she would give birth to Jesus, she asked, “How will this be… since I am a virgin?” (Luke 1:34). Humanly speaking, it was impossible. Yet the angel assured her: “For no word from God will ever fail” (Luke 1:37). In due time, she gave birth to the Saviour.
When Jesus learned that His friend Lazarus had died, He deliberately delayed. By the time He arrived in Bethany, Martha met Him with the cry, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died” (John 11:21). Later she added, “by this time there is a bad odor, for he has been there four days” (John 11:39). The situation looked hopeless. But Jesus replied, “Did I not tell you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?” Then He called out in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” And the dead man came out, still wrapped in grave clothes (John 11:40–44). What was impossible with man was possible with God.
Joseph’s brothers once plotted his death and sold him into slavery after he shared the dreams that they would one day bow before him. Years later they stood before him in Egypt, astonished to discover that God had raised him to be second only to Pharaoh. Joseph told them, “You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives” (Genesis 50:20). Their father Jacob, who had long believed Joseph was dead, was finally reunited with him. “As soon as Joseph appeared before him, he threw his arms around his father and wept for a long time. Israel said to Joseph, ‘Now I am ready to die, since I have seen for myself that you are still alive’” (Genesis 46:29–30). Where every human indicator said “finished,” God brought the prophecy to pass.
What burden are you carrying that feels impossible? A court case in which your adversary seems to hold every advantage? The dream of buying land and building a house while your account stands empty? A stage-4 cancer diagnosis that the doctors call terminal? By every natural measure the situation looks finished.
Fear not. Lift your eyes to God in faith. What is impossible with man is possible with God!
Prayer: Heavenly Father God, where I am faced with a situation that appears beyond control, and everything seems lost, I turn and look to you, knowing and believing that what is impossible with man is possible with God. So I know you will turn this situation around, to your glory. This I pray in Jesus’s name.
