"I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” — Philippians 4:13
The Apostle Paul often illustrated important points by drawing from the world of athletics. In one example, intended to encourage perseverance and determination, he wrote, “Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize” (1 Corinthians 9:24). Clearly, Paul did not see defeat or complacency as God’s calling for His children.
Indeed, God desires us to succeed in every assignment He entrusts to us and to overcome every challenge we face. When Nehemiah returned to Jerusalem to rebuild its broken walls, the task before him was formidable. Opposition arose immediately. “When Sanballat heard that we were rebuilding the wall, he became angry and was greatly incensed. He ridiculed the Jews” (Nehemiah 4:1).
Yet Nehemiah understood that God wanted him to win. Rather than giving in to fear or discouragement, he turned to God in prayer: “Hear us, our God, for we are despised. Turn their insults back on their own heads…” (Nehemiah 4:4). His confidence rested not in his own strength but in God’s power and faithfulness.
In the end, the walls were completed, and the people rejoiced. A victorous Nehemiah declared, “Go and enjoy choice food and sweet drinks, and send some to those who have nothing prepared. This day is holy to our Lord. Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength” (Nehemiah 8:10).
Like Nehemiah, you too may be facing fierce opposition in the work God has called you to do. But remember: the God who gave Nehemiah victory over his enemies also gave Moses victory over Pharaoh, David over Saul, Daniel over the lions’ den, and Jesus Christ victory over death itself. He is the same God today, and He will see you through.
The enemy’s mission is very different though. Jesus said of Satan, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy” (John 10:10). But God’s power is infinitely greater than the enemy’s schemes. If you are feeling weary or discouraged by the battles before you, persevere with confidence, knowing that “The Lord your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you; in his love he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing” (Zephaniah 3:17).
Refuse to surrender to discouragement. Stand firmly on God’s promises. He declares, “For I know the plans I have for you… plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future” (Jeremiah 29:11). Unlike Satan, who delights in your defeat, God is working for your victory. He wants you to finish well, overcome every obstacle, and bring glory to His name.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You that You created me to be an overcomer through Christ. Because You are with me, I will face every challenge with courage and confidence, knowing that my victory is found in You. Strengthen me to persevere when the obstacles seem overwhelming. Keep me focused on Your promises, steadfast in faith, and patient as I wait for Your perfect timing. May my life be a testimony of Your power and faithfulness. In Jesus’ name I pray!
