God Our Refuge

“The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.” — Proverbs 18:10

In times of war, people seek refuge somewhere to escape danger and avoid finding themselves in harm’s way. A refuge is a safe place to which we run for shelter and protection. When we find ourselves caught in the midst of various challenges, difficulties, and uncertainties we seek refuge somewhere for safety and comfort.

Unfortunately, there are times when people facing challenges seek refuge in places that only make matters worse. Consider someone going through a difficult season at work or in the family who turns to alcohol or other substances for relief. In many cases, such individuals become hopelessly addicted, and their situation deteriorates further instead of improving.
There are refuges we may run to that offer only an illusion of protection. Even money has its limitations and cannot solve every problem, especially those of a deeply personal nature. Not every health challenge can be resolved by financial means, as some situations are beyond the ability of even the best healthcare providers.

Thankfully, there is a refuge we can all depend on regardless of our circumstances. When David was pursued by Saul and found himself hiding in a cave, he turned to God and prayed, “Have mercy on me, my God, have mercy on me, for in you I take refuge. I will take refuge in the shadow of your wings until the disaster has passed” (Psalm 57:1). Elsewhere, the psalmist declares, “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging” (Psalm 46:1-3).

Neither of us would choose to take refuge in a place where our safety is not guaranteed, where it is uncertain or can easily be compromised. In times of distress or sorrow, we long to run to a refuge where we are assured of being received with open arms. While our families can often be such safe places, they may sometimes fail us. But thankfully, there is a God who provides refuge for us in every situation. For, “The Lord is a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble. Those who know your name trust in you, for you, Lord, have never forsaken those who seek you” (Psalms 9:9–10).

Prayer

Lord Almighty Father God, what a blessing it is to know that there is a refuge I can run to for safe shelter when faced with any challenging situation. Today I come to You in full trust as my protector and deliverer, knowing that with You I am secure and safe. This I pray in Jesus’ name.
