God Who Opens Doors
“See, I have placed before you an open door that no one can shut.” — Revelation 3:8
Travelling through Asia with Silas, the Apostle Paul searched for open doors to share the Good News. Scripture tells us, “When they came to the border of Mysia, they tried to enter Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus would not allow them to” (Acts 16:7). One door was closed. But they did not become discouraged. They continued on in obedience. “So they passed by Mysia and went down to Troas. During the night Paul had a vision of a man of Macedonia standing and begging him, ‘Come over to Macedonia and help us’” (Acts 16:8–9). Where one door had been closed, God opened another—one that would lead to the spread of the Gospel into Europe.
Like these missionaries, everyday people look for doors to open. It may be a job opportunity, winning a tender, receiving a scholarship, or gaining access to influential people. Often success seems to depend on human connections and favour. Yet above every earthly gate stands God, who alone holds the keys to every door.
One can easily become discouraged when faced with closed doors. But there is One who opens doors that no person can shut. Later, when Paul and Silas were arrested and imprisoned, God opened the prison doors miraculously. “About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them. Suddenly there was such a violent earthquake that the foundations of the prison were shaken. At once all the prison doors flew open, and everyone’s chains came loose” (Acts 16:25–26). God had miraculously opened a door to freedom.
The Israelites often came upon what appeared to be closed doors. Trapped between the Red Sea and the advancing Egyptian army, their situation seemed impossible. Yet “Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and all that night the LORD drove the sea back with a strong east wind and turned it into dry land” (Exodus 14:21). The waters parted, and a path emerged where none had existed before. God had opened a door through His mighty power.
Perhaps lately you have encountered a closed door. You may be waiting for employment, travel overseas, business opportunity, education, marriage, healing, or restoration, yet every opportunity seems shut. Discouragement may be knocking at your heart, tempting you to give up.
Look up to God. He still holds the keys. He is able to open doors of opportunity, breakthrough, and destiny in His perfect time. As Paul testified, “A great door for effective work has opened to me, and there are many who oppose me” (1 Corinthians 16:9). Opposition may arise, but no obstacle can prevent God’s purposes from being fulfilled.
Prayer
Lord Almighty Father, whenever I encounter closed doors, help me look to You, for You alone can open what no one can shut. Guard my heart from discouragement and strengthen my faith to persevere as I wait upon Your timing. Open the doors that lead to Your purpose for my life and grant me favour before You and before people. In Jesus’ name I pray!
