Hunger for the Lord
"I am the living bread that came down out of heaven; if anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread also which I will give for the life of the world is My flesh" ( John 6:51)
Hunger is often associated with satisfying our natural cravings, and just as our bodies can get hungry for food and thirsty for water, so too, is our spirit man! Jesus said, 'Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good" ( 2 Peter 2:2-3). And once when confronted by Satan after a 40 day fast, the Lord pushed him off with, "It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God" ( Mathew 4:4).
Once our bodies become hungry we become restless until we find something to eat! But just then, our spirit man can also become hungry, causing us to be spiritually restless, and we should not hesitate to feed the spirit in us of the things of the Lord. When a body is starved after it is fed with food there is a sweat sensation and calmness returns. Just as well, when we feed our empty spirit with God's word and praises, the Holy Spirit in us is pleased and there is a calmness that returns.
The Apostle Paul tells us, "Do not quench the Spirit" ( I Thessolonian 5:19), meaning once hungry for the Lord we should not hesitate to fill our spirit!
Prayer for today: Lord Father God of Abraham, maker of heaven and earth, where I am hungry for you may I be filled with your spirit to be energised in your service, this I pray in Jesus name!
