“Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things” - Col 3:2 (NIV)

What happens if you were assigned a "big" position - the kind that comes with perks like a fully furnished mansion and a fueled chauffeur driven SUV- and then one day your boss reassigns you to a less significant post with a fraction of the perks you used to enjoy. Horror! Do you stand in the way to assert your rights, like reminding boss how he owes you so much? Go to court. Perhaps.

One day, a gentleman I know of, his boss without clear reason, assigned him to a less significant position. Rather than resist, the gentleman simply moved aside and asked how to be of help in his new stead. On the contrary I am aware of not too few people. When asked to step aside, they dutifully resisted. In fact, security officers had to be brought over to see they hand over office - peacefully! Well, of course, you know of dictators who will not give up office without a bloody fight.

As Christians what should be our attitude when we are given "big" positions? Do we start looking up to them as the very end of our life - and lo, forbid, should a moment come when we are asked to hand over office, all hell is loosed! That could very well happen if we set our eyes on the position and all its lure. Yet our hearts should always remain centered on things above, and the Lord who provides us all good things. As his word says, “And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus” (Phil 4:19)!

Prayer for the day: Lord Father in heaven, I pray today that the focus of my life is never on position of things around me but you Lord!
