“For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned” – (Romans 12:3).

Humility is one of the characteristics of the gracious Christian life. This is all against a recent trend to portray Christian life as a rock star experience. In some circles the show man lifestyle is now coveted and seen as a proof of God’s blessing. But Jesus said, “The greatest among you shall be your servant” (Mathew 23: 11, ESV).

The Apostle Paul reminded the believers, “Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others” (Phil 2:4, ESV). And the Apostle Peter admonishes, “Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble” (1 Peter 5:5).

There are certain rewards when we practice humility. “Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted” (Mathew 23:12, ESV). Mathew further writes, “So the last will be first, and the first will be last” (Mathew 20:16).

A mistake that some make is equating humility to being a doormat. But this view is mistaken. The Apostle Paul had once a revelation from God, “But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me” (2 Cor 12:9).

In other words, when we are humble, there is a power that is revealed greater than us - of Jesus Christ! Hence the promise, “Blessed are the humble, for they will inherit the earth” ( Mathew 5:5)

Prayer for today: Lord Father God of Abraham, maker of heaven and earth, today I lift you up, knowing that when I am low you are up- that your glory may shine and go ahead of me, this I pray in Jesus’s name.
