“The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God” (1 Corinthians 2:9-10)
A funny thing happened. Abraham and Lot had accumulated vast herds of cattle, so much that their herdsmen started quarreling amongst each other. “Now Lot, who was moving about with Abram, also had flocks and herds and tents. But the land could not support them while they stayed together, for their possessions were so great that they were not able to stay together. And quarreling arose between Abram’s herders and Lot’s” (Genesis 13:5-7).
To solve this quandary, the brothers decided to split. “So Abram said to Lot, “Let’s not have any quarreling between you and me, or between your herders and mine, for we are close relatives. Is not the whole land before you? Let’s part company. If you go to the left, I’ll go to the right; if you go to the right, I’ll go to the left” (vv 8-9). Lot was given first choice. He, “looked around and saw that the whole plain of the Jordan toward Zoar was well watered, like the garden of the LORD ... So Lot chose for himself the whole plain of the Jordan and set out toward the east” ( vv 10-11).
Happy that he had the better part, Lot moved on leaving Abraham to what seemed like an inferior possession. Oh, wait, this is not what it turned out to be. “The LORD said to Abram after Lot had parted from him, “Look around from where you are, to the north and south, to the east and west. All the land that you see I will give to you and your offspring forever” (vv 14-15). This
is the land which Abraham’s ancestors hold on to this day.
Abraham’s good fortune was that the Lord chose for him. He personally could not have imagined the treasure that he was about to behold. There are indeed situations in life where we come across a matter that seems to be empty and not of apparent use. Indeed, we might hasten to leave it behind, hurrying to move on to something spectacular and clearly more appealing. In these instances it takes the Lord to reveal to us, that here is gold, and we better stay put.
If we rely on only our perception of events or things, or imagination, we are all likely to fall into the illusion Lot had that he had the best portion. But with the Lord with us He can surely reveal to us what we can easily ignore as not worthwhile. This is why we must always pray for the Lord to open our eyes, to all situations, which He can clearly see through.
Prayer for today: Lord Father God of Abraham, maker of heaven and earth, today I pray that you open my eyes to all situations, revealing to me the truth within, even where I see nothing, but for your grace, this I pray in Jesus’ name.
