"Not that we are sufficient in ourselves to claim anything as coming from us, but our sufficiency is from God.." - 2 Cor 3:5 (ESV)

A certain friend had a huge drinking problem. It grew to a point where he could no longer function without helping himself to a bottle. Yet the more he drank the greater the urge. "As soon as I woke up I would aim for the pubs," he once shared. "Even a full crate of beer could not satisfy me!" He was a captive.

One day his relatives tricked him to be taken someplace. They ended up confining him in a rehab centre. Once he realised where he was he sought to break out. But the place was locked up. His body cried out for licquor which it was dependent. Eventually he calmed down and resigned himself to his saroundings.

It is at this point when his patrons shared with him the 12 steps of Alcoholic Ananymous. Listening to them he recalled scriptures he had once heard. Step 2: "Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity"- For nothing will be impossible with God (Luke 1:37). Step 3:
"Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him"- "Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up" (James 4:7).

It is at that point that this friend decided to surrender back his life to Jesus, to take complete control of his life. Step 7: "Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings"- "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest" (Mathew 11:28).

Havng accepted Christ this friend made fast progress and was soon released all dry and sober. He has never touched the bottle again because of the sufficiency he found in Christ.

Prayer for today: Lord Father God of Abraham, maker of heaven and earth, in you there is power to fullfil every quench of our lives, this is why I surrender my whole being completely to you, in Jesus's name.
