Success for the Journey
“But you will not go out in haste, nor will you go out as fugitives; for the Lord will go before you, and the God of Israel will be your rear guard” (Isaiah 52:12).
Whenever we set out on a journey, there are certain important things we make sure to pack before leaving home. If one is travelling abroad, a passport is essential. In many countries, a yellow fever certificate is required before entry is granted. Since the coronavirus pandemic, a negative PCR test also became mandatory in several places before boarding a plane.
But beyond travel documents, what else do we truly need for the journey?
Long ago, when Isaac came of age, his father Abraham desired that he marry from among his own people, whom they had left behind years earlier. Abraham therefore summoned one of his trusted servants and sent him back to his homeland to find a wife for Isaac. Naturally, the servant prepared carefully for the journey, taking along camels and all the provisions he would need.
When he finally arrived at the town of Nahor, his destination, the servant—whose name remains unknown—did something both remarkable and memorable.
“Then he prayed, ‘Lord, God of my master Abraham, make me successful today, and show kindness to my master Abraham’” (Genesis 24:12).
The servant asked God for a sign that would confirm he was in the right place and on the right mission. The Bible tells us, “Before he had finished praying, Rebekah came out…” Later, the servant bowed down in worship, acknowledging God’s guidance: “The Lord has led me on this journey” (Genesis 24:15–27).
In time, he returned successfully with Rebekah after explaining his mission to her family, who blessed her saying, “Our sister, may you increase to thousands upon thousands; may your offspring possess the cities of their enemies” (Genesis 24:60).
Every one of us is on a journey. For some, the road is short; for others, it is long and uncertain. Yet each new day presents another step along life’s path. May we learn from Abraham’s servant, who understood that the most important thing one can carry on any journey is prayer.
Prayer for Today
Lord Father in heaven, today I pray in the loving name of Jesus that as I journey through life, You will bless, guide, and prosper me just as You blessed Abraham’s servant. Go before me and be my rear guard. This I pray in Jesus’ name!
