“Remember the things I have done in the past. For I alone am God! I am God, and there is none like me” ( Isaiah 46:9)
Remembrace Day is when on 11 November Western Europe gathers to commemorate the end of World War 1. A peace agreement was signed bringing to an end a war that had left 40 million dead and wounded. Although almost all who survived that war are now gone it is still honored in appreciation of the peace that resulted after much loss of innocent lives.
This kind of remembrace is also important to God. For as they entered the promised land, Moses cautioned the Israelites, “When the Lord your God brings you into the land he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, to give you—a land with large, flourishing cities you did not build, houses filled with all kinds of good things you did not provide, wells you did not dig, and vineyards and olive groves you did not plant—then when you eat and are satisfied, be careful that you do not forget the Lord, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery” ( Deuteronomy 6: 10-12). Among others the Israelites were tasked to remember the goodness of the Lord by observing his ways.
Like the Israelites, you too the Lord has done great things in your life up to this point. For you were once held and lost in captivity but the Lord freed you and gave you salvation. You were once without hope and feeding on crumbs of the powerful but the Lord provided you with means. You once lived in dark fear of what next but the Lord liberated you and gave you hope through his son Jesus Christ!
If the people of the world know the value of remembering and honoring those that lay down their lives in war, how about you too remembering the good God for all he has done for you. For as the psalmists sings, “I will remember the deeds of the Lord; yes, I will remember your miracles of long ago. I will consider all your works and meditate on all your mighty deeds.” Your ways, God, are holy. What god is as great as our God? You are the God who performs miracles; you display your power among the peoples” ( Psalm 77: 11-14).
Prayer today: Lord Father God of Abraham, maker of heaven and earth, today I pause to remember all that you have done for me and your goodness, so I will sing praises of you and tell others of your wonders, this I pray in Jesus’s name!
