“When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me” (I Cor 13:11)

Children like to be excited. In fact, good businesses tap into this need by building theme parks for children to experience a fantasy world. Every child would love to go to a fantasy park of swings and games where there are endless trips of pleasure.

One thing though about children is that there are easily bored. The moment they experience to the full that amazing event they move on seeking another excitement. It’s normal to find children running from one pleasure event to another, dropping all they have just enjoyed.

Unlike children certain adults are not pleasure driven but would seek substance over excitement. Even if the experience no longer carries magic they will stick in there. Why! Because there is something deeper. Perhaps it is a lesson they crave to learn. These are often referred to as mature adults.

Perhaps here we may note the Christian life is not like a theme park. There are yes those spectacular moments when God surprises us with unique blessings. But the Christian life can also involve long spells of draught. If one was hooked on only excitement, as some of the children, of course his faith would quickly be eroded. Because of lack of excitment he would gradually lose faith and walk away to where the excitement is. Hence James writes: “Blessed is a man who perseveres under trial; for once he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him” ( James 1: 12).

Prayer today: Lord Father God of Abraham, maker of heaven and earth, today I commit the maturing of my faith into your hands, to lead me to hold on to you, through the good and bad, this to your glory, in Jesus’
