“Praise be to the name of God for ever and ever; wisdom and power are his. He changes times and seasons, he sets up kings and despises them” - 2 Kings 2:20-21 (NIV)

Democratic systems liken to imagine that leaders owe their support from the power of the people. Hence, occasionally they hold election rounds where people are free to choose the leader they want. While this is often a good system that brings accountability democracy has also its flows. Who is not aware of populist tendencies to pander to any whim of the electorate in order to win votes? At other times we have seen open bribery as candidates scout for votes.

While the way of the world is to choose the leader it wants often God can also make a choice for us. When David was chosen to succeed Saul this was because was he was after God’s heart. David lacked the physique of Saul who was said to be a head taller than all the rest of his people. Even though David’s time was checked with some low moments there was never a doubt that serving God marked his administration.

As we look out for leaders let us bear in mind that God’s choice is the best- and his ways are not our ways.

Prayer for today: Lord Father in heaven today I pray that you give us not the leaders we want but your choice for us!
