“Even when there was no reason for hope, Abraham kept hoping, believing he would be the father of many nations. For God had said that he would become the Father of many nations” - Romans 4:18 (NLT).

It has been written, “Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a longing fulfilled is the tree of life” (Prov 13: 12). When someone is given hope of anything a certain expectation is created. Say hope of a pay raise. To the one promised such might even adjust his lifestyle in anticipation.

However, when the offer does not materialize soon as expected, the one promised may lose hope. In fact, some might even abandon the promise altogether and opt for some other ways to get what was promised.

As we see in our passage above when God promises something however long it takes He comes through in the end. As it is pointed out, “God is not a man that He should lie, or a son of man that he should change his mind. Has he said, and He would not do it. Or, has He spoken, and He will not fulfil it” (Numbers 23:19, ESV).

The prophet Abraham faced such a situation where it was so easy lose hope. Getting up in years the promise of him and Sarah having a child was long in coming. But in the end it all happened. For God’s ways are not man’s way. “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord” (Isaiah 55:8, NIV). At His own time He comes through.

When God promises us something we should not lose hope. For He never fails.

Prayer for today: Lord Father in heaven, today I pray in the mighty name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, that I may hold on with faith the things you have promised me to come and never lose hope.
