“Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with Me.”Revelation 3:20

When Jesus heard of Lazarus’ death, He said, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep; but I am going there to wake him up” (John 11:11). While Jesus healed and delivered many people, Lazarus is specifically described as His friend. A friend is someone you know well, love, and trust. What endears us to true friends are qualities such as loyalty, faithfulness, and their willingness to stand with us in times of need.

The friendship between David and Jonathan beautifully illustrates this kind of devotion. Scripture tells us that “the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul” (1 Samuel 18:1). Jonathan even risked his own safety by refusing to betray David’s whereabouts, despite his father Saul’s fierce anger. Saul rebuked him, saying, “You son of a perverse and rebellious woman!… You have sided with the son of Jesse to your own shame” (1 Samuel 20:30). Such was the depth of Jonathan’s loyalty.

Yet the greatest example of friendship is found in Jesus Christ. He did not call His disciples servants but friends (John 15:15). He shared meals with sinners, including corrupt tax collectors, wept with those who mourned like Lazarus’s sisters, restored those who had fallen like Mary Magdalene, and ultimately laid down His life for those who would one day deny and even betray Him. His friendship is unlike any other, for it is rooted in unconditional love and unwavering grace.

Even today, Jesus continues to demonstrate His friendship by interceding for us before the Father. Scripture declares: “Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us” (Romans 8:34). His friendship sustains us through loneliness, rejection, disappointment, and betrayal. Indeed, Proverbs reminds us that “there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother” (Proverbs 18:24).

Most importantly, God’s friendship does not depend on our perfection but on His grace. Even when we stumble, He lovingly calls us back, forgives us, and restores us.

Today, amid all the uncertainties and upheavals of life, you can rest in the assurance that you have a constant and everlasting Friend in God through Christ Jesus. People may disappoint you or abandon you, but Jesus remains faithful. He is the Friend who never leaves, never forsakes, and is always present to strengthen, comfort, and guide you.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, I thank You for being my constant and everlasting Friend, One whom I can always rely on for companionship, strength, wisdom, and help in every season of life. Thank You for never leaving me nor forsaking me. Help me to cherish this friendship by walking faithfully with You each day and by sharing Your love and faithfulness to others. I pray this in the precious name of Jesus Christ!
