“Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6, NIV)
Have you ever been deceived by someone you trusted? Few things hurt as deeply as discovering that a person you relied on deliberately misled you. Deception leaves behind regret, broken trust, and painful consequences.
Consider a person who becomes engaged and marries, only to later discover their spouse had hidden previous marriages. The deception was motivated solely by selfish gain. That can be devastating.
But we shouldn’t be surprised when deceit appears in our lives. Its origin goes back to Adam and Eve with eating the forbidden fruit (Genesis 3:1-6). Jesus clearly identified the source of lies when He said: “You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.” (John 8:44)
Scripture gives many examples of Satan’s deceit. After Jesus’ 40-day fast, the devil took Him to an exceedingly high mountain and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world, saying, “All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me” (Matthew 4:8-9). Imagine such a naked lie, which Jesus scoffed off, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only (vv 10).
Wherever you find deceit, know Satan is at work. However, fortunately we have the God of Truth. As the Bible declares: “God is not a man, that He should lie, nor a son of man, that He should change His mind. Has He said, and will He not do it? Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good?” (Numbers 23:19). Indeed history shows God comes through with His word. He promised David that his descendant would build a temple for His glory. Though David did not build it, His word was fulfilled through his son Solomon (1 Kings 6).
In a world filled with deceit — broken job and campaign promises, betrayed confidences, false accusations, and stolen property — it is deeply comforting to know we serve the God of Truth. Even better, He is a righteous Judge who will one day set every wrong right: “For God will bring every deed into judgment, including every hidden thing, whether it is good or evil.” (Ecclesiastes 12:14)
Prayer: Heavenly Father, in a world full of uncertainty and deception, I thank You that You are the God of Truth. Thank You for helping me discern truth from lies and for giving me victory over Satan’s lies. Protect me from every attempt of Satan to deceive and lead me astray. Let the truth of Your Word be my constant guide. May I walk in Your truth and experience the freedom and victory that come from knowing You. I pray this in the mighty name of Jesus!
