“I keep my eyes always on the LORD. With him at my right hand, I will not be shaken” ( Psalm 16:8).

The Bible has numerable instances of those who slipped while on duty, perhaps because they lost focus. Moses had seen the hand of God through incredible moments, such as the parting of the Red Sea which gave way for the Israelites against the storming Egyptians. Yet, in spite of all, he would slip when his faith was exercised on a less demanding task.

When the stubborn Israelites lost out in a desert cried out to him for water, even accusing him of leading them on to a suicidal path, he turned to the Lord. “The Lord said to Moses, ‘Take the staff, and you and your brother Aaron gather the assembly together. Speak to that rock before their eyes and it will pour out its water. You will bring water out of the rock for the community so they and their livestock can drink’( Numbers 20: 7-8).

Looks like it was a simple command given all Moses had seen. With Aaron on his side, “Moses said to them, Listen, you rebels, must we bring you water out of this rock?” Then Moses raised his arm and struck the rock twice with his staff. Water gushed out, and the community and their livestock drank” ( Numbers 20:10-11). Take note he hit the rock twice, and he had been just told to “Speak to that rock...” He had slipped, very badly. “But the Lord said to Moses and Aaron, “Because you did not trust in me enough to honor me as holy in the sight of the Israelites, you will not bring this community into the land I give them” ( vv 12).

So, Moses, and his right hand man Aaron, never reached the Promised land! Perhaps here it is worth speculating why he slipped. It could have been the pressure of the mob on him that forced him lose concentration. What though is clear he lost focus on the power of the Almighty God by imagining the rock would gush out water based on the strength of his hitting the rock hard. Yet, truth is, even if he had merely whispered, water would have still gushed out. There was no need for further demonstration.

God has led you too through innumerable moments where he showed you his might. Now he is asking you to look up to him with faith. But you shouldn’t let yourself slip, thinking that the task at hand you will accomplish it because of your might. Rather the Lord is saying “You may say to yourself, “My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me.” But remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth..” ( Deuteronomy 8:17-18).

Prayer today: Lord Father God of Abraham, maker of heaven and earth, today I pray to focus absolutely on you through whatever task there is knowing it is not by might but your power that I accomplish anything, this I pray in Jesus’s name!
