“So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed - John 8:36 (NIV)

Addictions come in many colours and forms. There used to be a time when smoking cigarettes was the giant of all addictions. Many of those addicted to cigarettes even after listening to all the good advice of its danger couldn’t stop. They had been hooked and seemed trapped for ever.

Alcohol has remained a troublesome addiction. For the many it has hooked the bottle sadly is the king of their lives. Even where they feel they need to break away because of its corrosive damage still they are pulled and just can’t let go.

These days a new addiction in our lives is the smart phone. Just as with dangers of cigarette smoking and alcohol abuse the smart phone has the pull that’s making many hopelessly hooked. Already studies are emerging of damaged fingers due to obsessive tapping of the smart phone.

Almost with all addictions someone is profiting at another’s ruin. The manufacturers of cigarettes and alcohol deliberately lace them with addictive substances. There are sweeteners for Coke and many other beverages people can’t put down once they get started. For the smart phones there are countless enticing features it offers which are meant to hook one 24/7 and increase its sales.

This is why we need to draw upon the power of God to help us overcome whatever addiction that has become master of our lives. Left alone an addiction can become a god we worship. To overcome an addiction starts by conceding one has a problem. Then surrendering it to the Lord Jesus to give us power and wisdom to overcome it, as He has promised.

Prayer for today: Lord Father in heaven, today I pray in the mighty name of Jesus of Nazareth that you give me power and wisdom to overcome whatever addiction come my way to control my life and become an object of worship!
