“Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift!” (2 Corinthians 9:15)

The culture of giving runs throughout Scripture and lies at the very heart of the Gospel. When the wise men realized that Jesus Christ had been born, they did not come empty-handed. “On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented Him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh” (Matthew 2:11).

Likewise, when Jacob decided to return to his homeland, he prepared gifts to soften the heart of his twin brother Esau, whom he had left deeply angered because of past wrongs. “He selected these gifts from his possessions to present to his brother Esau” (Genesis 32:13), including goats, sheep, camels, cattle, and donkeys. Jacob reasoned, “I will appease him with the gifts I am sending ahead; later, when I see him, perhaps he will receive me” (Genesis 32:20).

Esau was already a wealthy man and had no need of the gifts Jacob brought. Yet Jacob pleaded with him, saying, “Please accept the present that was brought to you, for God has been gracious to me and I have all I need” (Genesis 33:11). Because Jacob insisted, Esau accepted the gift. That gesture touched Esau’s heart and helped bury the bitterness that had long existed between them.

From these examples, believers are reminded of the importance of generosity and thoughtful giving. We should not hesitate to bless others, not merely because they are lacking, but as an expression of love, appreciation, and kindness. Often, it is not the value of the gift that matters most, but the spirit behind it. Proverbs 11:25 says, “A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.”

Prayer:Lord Father God of Abraham, Maker of heaven and earth, today I thank You for the greatest gift of all — eternal life through faith in our Lord Jesus Christ. Teach me to be generous and willing to bless others with whatever You have entrusted to me, this I pray in Jesus’s name!
