“Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him.” (James 1:12, ESV)
The way a baby learns to walk offers powerful lessons for adults on how to grow in faith. Every child begins with faltering, unsteady steps. They fall repeatedly, yet rise again, unfazed, because their eyes are fixed on a higher goal. Eventually they succeed — a little bruised, but stronger — simply because they never gave up. The struggle proves worthwhile.
The Christian journey is much the same. Our faith is often marked by faltering steps and obstacles: doubts and struggles with belief, personal challenges such as job loss or business failure, persistent health issues, shattered hopes in people, or even opposition and persecution for sharing our faith openly.
Like the baby who falls, the believer must be willing to rise again and again. What enables us to persevere is keeping our eyes on a much higher goal. People tend to give up quickly when their goals are too low. But those whose sights are set on something far greater than themselves find the strength to continue.
The Apostle Paul encouraged the believers in Corinth with these words: “We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed” (2 Corinthians 4:8-9). We press on because we know there is victory at the end.
Prayer for today: Heavenly Father, God of Abraham, Maker of heaven and earth, whenever my faith is tested by challenges of every kind, grant me the grace to persevere. Help me keep my eyes fixed on the higher crown You have promised. I ask this in Jesus’ name.
