God Is Compassionate
“The Lord is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and rich in love.” — Psalm 145:8
Jesus once told the parable of the Good Samaritan to illustrate the compassionate nature of God. A man was attacked by robbers, beaten, and left stranded by the roadside. As he lay there half dead, both a priest and a Levite passed by without offering help. Then, “a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, brought him to an inn and took care of him” (Luke 10:33–34). The Samaritan showed compassion to a stranger who desperately needed help.
Our God is a compassionate God. Compassion is the ability to identify with another person’s pain and respond with kindness, mercy, and love. While human compassion is often limited, God’s compassion is boundless. He sees our struggles, understands our weaknesses, and reaches out to us with grace even when we feel undeserving.
Around us are countless situations that call for compassion. At one time or another, each of us may find oneself in need of it. It may be a health condition for which every medical intervention seems ineffective. It may be the loss of a job, a failed business, financial hardship, or a broken relationship. Sometimes we face challenges that others cannot understand, and instead of receiving support, we are met with criticism and judgment.
Such was the case when a sinful woman approached Jesus. “As she stood behind him at his feet weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them and poured perfume on them” (Luke 7:38). When the Pharisees saw this, they were filled with indignation because they knew of the woman’s troubled past. Yet Jesus responded differently. Rather than rebuking or rejecting her, He looked upon her with compassion and said, “Your sins are forgiven… Your faith has saved you; go in peace” (vv. 48–50).
Perhaps today you feel lonely, rejected, or unloved. You may be burdened by guilt and convinced that no one understands what you are going through. Perhaps you have lost a position, an opportunity, or a place you once considered secure. Yet our God is compassionate. He rises above human judgment and reaches out to embrace us in His love and mercy.
When God shows compassion to us, He also calls us to extend that same compassion to others. Like the Good Samaritan, we should not pass by those who are hurting or in need. Instead, we should be willing to offer help, encouragement, and practical support wherever we can. God often rewards acts of compassion by blessing us in ways we could never have imagined.
As you go about your day, rest in the assurance that you serve a compassionate God. He sees your circumstances, understands your pain, and is ready to receive you with open arms. No situation is beyond His care, and no person is beyond His love.
Prayer
Lord Almighty Father, I come before You with confidence because You are a compassionate God. Thank You for accepting me as I am and for understanding every challenge I face. Help me to trust in Your unfailing love and mercy. Strengthen me through every trial, and deliver me according to Your perfect will. Teach me also to show compassion to others as You have shown compassion to me. This I pray in Jesus’ name!
