God of Peace!

“Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times and in every way. The Lord be with all of you.” — 2 Thessalonians 3:16

Once, while the disciples were crossing the lake in a boat, a fierce storm arose. The winds raged so violently that they feared for their lives. Panic and restlessness gripped them. Yet Jesus was with them. Scripture tells us, “Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, ‘Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?’ He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, ‘Quiet! Be still!’ Then the wind died down and it was completely calm” (Mark 4:38–39). After the storm of terror came perfect peace.

Peace has been described as a state of harmony and freedom from conflict, violence, or anxiety. It is a blessing that all people long for, for it enables us to live and pursue our calling without fear. Yet life is full of circumstances that rob us of peace.

Financial pressures can leave one wondering how to make ends meet. A person facing a legal dispute over his inheritance may lose sleep fearing the outcome. When enemies rise against one at the workplace, peace quickly disappears. Wars and violence have displaced millions from their homes, depriving them of the security and comfort they once knew.

I once heard the story of a daughter whose father drowned in Lake Victoria. Though deeply saddened by his death, she remarked, “The day my father died was the day peace finally came to our home.” Sadly, while he was alive, the father had terrorized his family. Many homes today lack peace because of constant quarrels, harsh words, and divisions , just as this child experienced.

One assurance believers have is that God desires His children to live in peace. This peace begins with knowing God through Jesus Christ. A person separated from God cannot experience true peace. As Scripture declares, “Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ” (Romans 5:1).

Once we are reconciled to God through His Son, Jesus Christ, He gives us a peace that “surpasses all understanding,” even in situations that would leave many overwhelmed with fear. Jesus assured His disciples, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives” (John 14:27).

Any one of us may wake up anxious about a certain matter—whether a payment will come through, whether our health will improve, or what the future may hold. Yet God invites us to cast our anxieties upon Him. His Word says, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God … will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6–7).

Today, may the peace of God fill your heart and enable you to walk in confidence, knowing that He watches over you. Whatever your circumstances may be, look to the God who never fails. May His peace surround you and abide with you always.

Prayer: Lord Almighty Father, today I turn to You and ask for that peace which surpasses all human understanding. Help me not to focus on the circumstances of my life, however difficult they may seem, but to look up to You. Calm every storm raging within and around me, for You are the God of peace. I pray this in Jesus’ name!
